Journey of a Lifetime

Not sure I want to start

this way,

unsure where I’ll finish,

and where we go

all the while,

I don’t know.

Never claimed to be a Ranger.

Travel is

as travel does.

Pick up my pack

and get walking.

Some things

are gonna make sense

along the way,

but a lot of it

is just for looking at.

A man can’t chase down

every mystery

he comes across,

unless he want to spend

his whole life

chasing.

I guess the same goes

for memories,

because you can chase those

and get lost, too.

See,

this is why

I didn’t want to start this way.

I just gets too easy

to get off track.

The mind plays tricks on you

on the road,

in the dark,

alone.

Best to get you a companion.

Get a dog.

Don’t try to find meaning

in those things

that you have long abandoned.

It’s the truth;

the only way is forward.

Head for the mountains.

There you’ll find struggle.

There you’ll find peace

in the high country,

and reward in its valleys.

If you tire of the hills,

and the old spirits that live there,

head  to the ocean

and lose yourself in the waves

and the vast, blue evermore.

Stop at every little town

along the way.

You’ll meet a few others

that walked the same road you’re on

and quit.

They are lessons.

Know this;

you’re not the only one searching,

but there’s a whole world

who are selling

cheap imitations,

knock-offs,

of the life you’re trying to live.

Don’t give up,

but don’t be in a hurry.

The mountains,

and the ocean

have been around

a few billion years,

they’ll  wait a little longer.

This is why I always wonder.

if this is how I want to start,

because the next thing I know

I’m gone.
