Up on the Mountain

It gets tight

up on the mountain.

Switchbacks,

and blind corners.

Narrow roads

with no shoulders,

and trees

right up close

to the road.

The higher up you get,

the worse condition

the road is in.

One side

is only the face of the mountain,

the other,

a sheer cliff.

You’ll want to go slow

on these old goat trails.

You’ll want to pick your way along

careful,

but those steep grades

require momentum,

and momentum

requires speed.

Don’t brake,

threading the needle

through this great

spiral pathway

that winds up to the sky.

The treacherous path to Heaven.
