The Drop

I can hear the “tick-tick-tick”

of the roller coaster,

starting its climb

to the top,

then the drop

into madness.

I thought we were

past the point

of anticipation.

I thought the ride was over.

I want to get off.

I can hear the “three-two-one”

of the launch director,

counting down

the seconds

before ignition.

I thought we were

past this kind of

spectacle.

If we go up,

coming down

is inevitable.

I want to get off.

I thought

we were here,

our feet on solid ground.

Then I learn

that “solid”

is just relative to energy.

I thought we

were over

the vertex

and declining,

but I feel things

about to turn around.

Are we really going to do this?

Are you ready for the ride.

I know I don’t want to,

but for you,

I will.

See you on the other side.
