The Gift of Memory

The glaring lights

of days long past

still blind my eyes

when I look back,

and every waking hour

conjures a ghost.

My past regrets

are not good-byes.

I can’t forget,

I can’t excise

the memories

of those I loved the most.

Slip me in

to an unrepentant coma.

Let me sleep

and wake again in Summer.

Even the minor breaks

aren’t enough to get me through.

I started off better than most

and worse off than a few.

Here I am,

sweating out another yesterday.

My only hopes

lie in tomorrow.

all I can do now is pray,

and hide from my memories.
