Burning Prayers

Every word that we could not speak,

every pain and tortured misery,

fear and sadness,

trepidation,

we put away in this secret place.

Every hope and bright dawn coming,

every joy and thankful thought,

wishes for those,

who are around us

and blessings for those who are not.

A flowing script,

a writer’s hand,

a child’s scrawl,

a tradesman’s block letters.

A teacher’s words,

a mother’s cursive,

a daughter’s wish,

a father’s determination.

Words lit now

in the darkness,

and this firelight

calls them home.

Pray for us.

Pray for us all,

as we go one by one

into the fire.
