Loan Shark

There was a price to be paid.

I didn’t know it,

I didn’t know it,

but I kept paying.

Pay down the devil,

pay off the monster,

keeping the wolves from the door.

There was a price to be paid.

I didn’t know it,

I didn’t know it.

So much of what we do,

or don’t do,

never really matters.

Our little dreams,

our obsessions,

fears and goals,

don’t add up

to quite enough

tipping the scales.

we get our stuff,

then to dust

we return.

We never settle our scores,

or cover our debts.

Working so hard to forget

all our regrets.

As the sky is blue,

and water wet;

we haven’t found a way yet,

to open our eyes

to the lives we upset.

Paying a price

that I did not know.

I still don’t know,

but I keep paying it,

paying it on.
